WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT YOUR POND.

As a prospective fish farmer you need to know the following essential features of a standard fish pond

1.    DAM: This is the large area of the pond that holds water. It ensures the availability of water to the pond.

2.    CORE TRENCH: This is the excavated portion of the fish pond. It consolidates the wall with stones and water.

3.    DISTRIBUTION CHANNEL: This is the area which helps to introduce water into the pond.Water is distributed to all the sections of the pond until it gets to a particular volume. Fertilizer can equally be mixed with the water and distributed together. The purpose of adding fertilizers is to promote  the  growth of green plants so as to enhance  oxygen concentration of the pond.

4.    SPILL WAY: This is the passage for water to flow over or around a dam. It is usually positioned at one end of the dam. It uses wood or wire mesh screen.

5.    MONK: The monk regulates water level automatically  in the pond. It helps in the discharge of water from both the surface and the bottom. It has vertical low horizontal culverts or pipes. They are constructed with concrete.

6.    BOARD: These are structures which regulates the flow of water. They are made up of desirable wood and hold water inside the pond. They are fitted at the center or middle of the slabs or gates.

7.    SCREENS: These structures help to prevent the entry of undesirable species of fish into the pond. They also prevent the fish from moving out of the pond.

8.    DAM SLOPE:{INNER AND OUTER} This helps to regulate water movement into and out of the pond. It also ensures the availability of water in the pond. It is usually constructed at the beginning and end of the pond.

            TYPES OF CAT FISH TO START WITH

There are two types of cat fish to start with

·       FINGERLING: This is from FRY, age one to 45 days

·       JUVENILE: This is from age 46days to age 60 days old.

As a fresh fish farmer, it is advisable to stock your pond with Juvenile, to be free from risk of little size death.

You most get your stock from  reliable and reputable fish breeder or hatchery points. For a micro fish productions, a fish –farmer can start with at lease, between 100 to 150 Juveniles in the plastic tank.
